Up Close: Phil Maier
Written by Trey Daly

Impact Baseball sat down this Wednesday afternoon for our first "Up Close" interview with one of our own Mr. Phil Maier. Mr Maier is one of the great baseball minds in the state of North Carolina, he spent eleven years in the college coaching ranks. While coaching at High Point University in 2007, his pitching staff set the school strike out record. Maier also coached three All-Americans, eleven all conference players and six pitchers that went on to play professional baseball.

Name: Phil Maier

Coaching Experience:
Coached a total of 15 years – 11 years of college coaching, three years of HS coaching, and four years with the Dirtbags and counting.

As a former college pitching coach through the years, what has been your main message to all the pitchers you have coached?

Set the tempo, initiate contact, and learn to self-coach (know how to repeat your mechanics).

Who's the best player you ever coached in college?

Mark Shorey (NCAA DI, 3rd Team All-American)

What's your most memorable game coaching in college?

My most memorable game while coaching college baseball was a (1-0) ten inning victory over Coastal Carolina in the first round of the 2006 Big South Conference Tournament.

Being a former college coach, please give some advice to these high school kids out there wanting to play at the next level.

You need to put the effort in and let the chips fall where they may. Too many guys with a lot of talent take it for granted and do not excel. Too many guys with not so much talent do not push themselves to win a spot or position and just settle for being 2nd best.

When you think of the word "coach", who comes to mind?

My dad, he is the first person to really teach me both the fundamentals of the game and how to play it the right way.

Who's your favorite MLB team?

Milwaukee Brewers

Who's your favorite MLB Manager and why?

Joe Maddon – He takes a lot of young talent and teaches them fundamentals and how to be a champion.

Below I will use some baseball words, name a player you have coached here in North Carolina it reminds you of:

Hard-nosed: Chaz Frank
Work ethic: Benton Moss
Passion: Michael Russell
Game Changer: Wil Myers
Cannon: Logan Koch
Gamer: Chris Munnelly

What are your hobbies outside of baseball?

Enjoying other sports and spending time with my family.

What's the biggest difference between North Carolina and home (Wisconsin)?

Weather – no doubt. Also, you can’t have a relaxing vacation at the ocean up there.

If you could choose any sporting event to watch besides baseball, who would it be?

That’s easy – Green Bay Packers game at Lambeau Field.

Favorite Food:

I’ll eat almost anything.

Favorite television show:

Back in the day – Friends / Now – The Big Bang Theory

We would like to thank Mr. Phil Maier for his "Up Close" interview, please stay tuned to Impact Baseball for more exciting interviews to come...
